What is the PacificSport Development Squad?

PacificSport Fraser Valley’s Development Squad produces well-rounded and resilient athletes through the development of their foundational movement skills and physiological capacities.

Developing a skill set of physical attributes and fundamental movements during the early years of training can have long term benefits and allow for greater success in a young athlete’s sport of choice. Based on the Canadian Sport for Life’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD), the PacificSport Development Squad program caters to athletes in the Learn to Train and Train to Train stages. It is through strength and conditioning, foundational gymnastics, and sprint training that athletes will increase performance, decrease injury risk, manage fatigue, and coordinate their training schedule to ensure optimal performance in competition.

This program is designed for athletes between the ages of 12-17 in the developmental stage of their sport. The training provided in this program is deemed important for long term athlete development and will provide the building blocks for future movement development and physical preparation. The curriculum of strength and conditioning, gymnastics, sprinting, and education will provide athletes with the tools to take the next step into their future as an elite athlete. This multi-sport training program is complementary to the athletes’ current sport-specific practice and competition schedules.

A look at the program's components:

Strength & Conditioning
In partnership with True North Strength and Fitness, the strength and conditioning component of the program will introduce athletes to a number of key bodyweight and strength training exercises. The athletes will be taught the proper technique of the movements, which will maximize the training time in the weight room as well as decrease the risk of injury. This resistance training program will lead to great improvements in strength and power. Strength and Conditioning sessions (Mondays & Wednesdays) will be held at True North Strength and Fitness. 

The gymnastics portion of the program provides an opportunity for athletes to develop and strengthen functional movement skills and learn to control and manipulate their bodies through space. Developing mobility, flexibility, and body awareness will prepare the athletes for unpredictable sport situations. Gymnastics sessions (Fridays at 8:30pm) will be held at Flip City Gymnastics facility. 

The sprint training portion of the program will prepare the athletes for explosive and powerful movement on land. Improving the technical efficiency in these movements transfers to both sport specific and training situations. Athletes will be able to transfer their improved technical proficiency in high speed running to sport specific movements that require great force and velocity. Sprinting sessions (Fridays at 4pm) will be held at the McLeod Athletic Park. 

As part of a holistic approach to athlete development, the PacificSport Development Squad program provides an educational component. Part of being an elite athlete is ensuring that your mind, body, and self are attended to in conjunction with the physical training. By ensuring that our bodies are prepared in all areas, we can strive and excel in our sport. The education component will deliver workshops on topics such as nutrition, mental performance, and injury prevention.

Times: Mondays 7:00pm, Wednesdays 8:00pm, Fridays 4:00pm (Jan. 18-Mar. 1) & 8:30pm (Mar. 8-Apr. 5)
Location: Langley, BC
Cost: $480 plus tax

There are one day, two day, and three day per week options available. Cost will be adjusted accordingly.
